Keep your garden lush and thriving even in the scorching heat with these essential watering and care strategies.
Beating the Heat
The Indian summer can be harsh on your green friends. Temperatures soaring above 40°C mean your plants need extra attention to survive and thrive.
1. The Golden Rule: Water Deeply, Not Frequently
Shallow watering encourages shallow roots. Water deeply to encourage roots to grow further down where the soil stays cooler and moister. Early morning (before 8 AM) is the best time to water.
2. Mulching is Magic
Cover the soil around your plants with a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (dried leaves, wood chips, or straw). This acts as insulation, keeping the soil cool and significantly reducing evaporation.
3. Know Your Plants
Succulents and cacti need less water, while leafy tropicals and vegetables might need watering twice a day. Group plants with similar water needs together (hydro-zoning).
4. Shade Nets
For delicate plants, consider using a green shade net (50% or 75%) to filter the harsh midday sun. This can prevent leaf burn and reduce water stress.
5. Container Care
Potted plants dry out much faster than those in the ground. Check them daily. If a pot is extremely dry, submerge it in a bucket of water for 30 minutes to rehydrate the soil properly.
